Colleges value difference in experience and perspective. So when there’s a limited number of seats in the class and you have a specific trait that is overrepresented in that group they take what they need and they take the best of it without diluting the class of carbon copies. For example, Computer Science is boy heavy admissions pool, therefore girls will have an easier time being admitted than boys at school of Computer Science because she would bring a perspective that would be valuable and would raise the level of discourse every other student given her unique perspective. Note however; this is not at the compromise of the quality of the overall class, students are held to the same standards, it’s just that there are far less girls to pick from and the institution values their experiences as well.
